How to compare ski resorts
The resort with the most kilometres is not automatically the right one for your day. Compare the forecast first, then the slopes, lifts and mountain layout that fit your group.
Begin with snow at the right elevation
Worldwide snowfall rankings help you find candidates, but a ranking is a starting point. Open each resort’s forecast and compare snow, temperature, rain and wind at base, middle and top. If the forecast range differs by model or region, use the days actually available rather than assuming every resort has an identical 16-day outlook. See our forecast guide for a fuller reading.
Match the piste mix to your group
Look beyond total skiable kilometres. Easy, intermediate and advanced piste lengths can tell you whether a mountain suits beginners, mixed-ability friends or stronger skiers. Difficulty colours do not mean exactly the same thing in every country, so use them as local context. SnowSignal keeps mapped ski terrain separate from other trail and transport data.
Read lifts and vertical drop together
A larger lift count does not necessarily mean faster access to the terrain you want. Lift type, layout and the vertical distance you can ski matter too. Mapped lift and piste figures can differ from official resort totals as source coverage changes. The resort page links to official information where available, which is the place to confirm current operations.
Keep a resort distinct from its ski area
Connected pistes can join several named resorts into one ski area. SnowSignal distinguishes individual ski resorts from connected areas so a large area's terrain is not automatically presented as the size of one village resort. Check the page label and included resorts when comparing a sector with a wider connected destination.
Terrain maps and original source links help you see how lifts and pistes connect. Paper-map archive links may be historical; confirm the latest official map and operating status before skiing.
Save the shortlist
SnowSignal lets you save resorts and compare two at a time for free. Premium expands comparison to your saved resorts and lets you focus rankings on one country. Historical modelled averages can add seasonal context, but they do not replace a current forecast or official snow report.
