SnowSignal ski planning guide

How to read a ski resort snow forecast

A single snowfall number can hide where the snow falls. Before choosing a resort, look at the forecast across the mountain and at the conditions around it.

Start at the elevation you will ski

Valley and summit weather can differ sharply. SnowSignal shows forecasts for a resort’s base, middle and top so you can check the part of the mountain you expect to use. If the base is near freezing while the upper mountain is colder, consider whether precipitation may fall as rain lower down. A forecast for one elevation does not describe every piste.

Read snowfall with temperature and wind

Fresh snow is only one part of a ski day. Check temperature, rain, wind and freezing level alongside the snow forecast. Wind can affect comfort and lift operations; the forecast alone cannot tell you whether a particular lift will open. For safety and current operations, check the resort’s official information and local avalanche guidance before travelling.

Use the right forecast horizon

The free SnowSignal view covers five days. Premium offers an outlook of up to 16 days where the selected weather model and region provide that range. Longer-range forecasts are useful for comparing possible travel windows, but details can change as the date approaches. Recheck the forecast nearer your trip rather than treating a distant daily value as certain.

Check the update time and model

SnowSignal displays when its cached weather was updated and uses a default model selected for the area. Premium can choose among supported weather models. If two forecasts disagree, that is a useful sign of uncertainty. Read the latest available forecast again before committing to a long journey.

History gives context, not a forecast.

The app’s historical snow, rain and clear-day statistics are modelled averages near the resort centre. They describe a typical pattern, not measured snow on today’s slopes or a promise about next week.

Turn the forecast into a resort choice

After checking the weather, compare the terrain you actually want to ski. SnowSignal can show skiable distance, lift counts, vertical drop and mapped piste difficulty where the data is available. Our resort comparison guide explains how to read those figures without losing the distinction between an individual resort and a connected ski area.
